Foundation Stage Weekly Newsletter

Puffins and Penguins Weekly Newsletter, 31st January 2020

Dear Parents and Carers

It has been an exciting week for Puffins and Penguins. The children were inspired by our visitors: Blue Watch Fire Fighters from Torquay Fire Station and Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police.

Thank you to Mr Apps, Mr Fairclough and Mr Wenman for talking to the children and providing this wonderful experience.

Visitors from our Community

The Fire Service gripped the attention of the children by allowing them to sit in the fire engine, see the equipment and use the hose. They gave a talk on the importance of having a smoke alarm and making sure it is checked regularly. The fire service asked if there is anyone who does not have a smoke alarm fitted at home to pass on their details to school and they will fit one free of charge. We explored the history of fire engines and how the uniforms have changed over time. We used the language past, present and future.

To add to the excitement, we also had a wonderful visit from Devon and Cornwall Police. The officers provided an array of Police vehicles for the children to experience. They showed them a variety of equipment and let them try on different uniforms. They spoke to the children about keeping safe and what to do if you lose your grown up. They explained the many different roles within the police and the future opportunities for all the children. The children enjoyed recording their fingerprints and were fascinated to find out that they had ‘unique’ fingerprints.

Woodland Camp

In the woods this week the children finished laying bark on the path down to the woods. It was wonderful to see teamwork being used to complete the job. This week the children really took it upon themselves to take responsibility for the task and organise themselves. They remembered what they had done the week before and were able to delegate tasks and recognise when others needed help. Well done Puffins and Penguins.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been exploring subtraction through the use of stories. We used real objects and the language first, then, now.  For example, first there were six cakes, then my mum ate two of the cakes. Now there are four cakes left. We enjoyed using playdough to play ‘subtraction squash’ – rolling five balls of dough then squashing two of them to find out how many were left. We used white boards and pens to draw number stories. E.g First there were five dinosaurs (draw five dinosaurs), then 2 flew away (we rubbed off two of the dinosaurs), now there are three dinosaurs left. Some children had a go at beginning to write number sentences to go alongside these pictures (5-2 = 3).
