Our Reading Scheme
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum at Preston, it is the key to all other curriculum areas. The whole school begins the day with reading lessons. Everyone is engaged in reading activities at the same time, it is a very special time of the day where we teach the necessary skills for reading but also promote the love of reading.
We begin the teaching of reading from day one using the Read Write Inc approach. It is a systematic, synthetic phonics approach which is highly successful. This phonics programme is highly successful, very much enjoyed by the children and helps to encourage a love of books.

As the children progress in their reading we focus on the necessary skills needed to be fluent and engaging readers and to read with comprehension.
Currently the school is preparing the Library for the introduction of ‘Accelerated Reader’. This is a reading program that helps the children to choose appropriate texts linked to their reading ages, interest ages and interests. Once it is up and running the children are invited to take quizzes about the texts they have read, ensuring their understanding of the texts. It is also a really useful tool for teachers to monitor the reading progress and habits of every child in their classes. We are really looking forward for this to be up and running.
