'Erika's Story'

Learning experience

Please find the details of our intended Learning Experience for the next six weeks:

‘Erika’s Story’.

During this Learning Experience, children will learn about the ‘Kindertransport’, which took place in the late 1930s and early 40s, and link it to their own understanding of having freedom and individual liberty. This Learning Experience links to the children’s previous learning in their ‘Code Breakers’ Learning Experience in Unit 3 and ‘Full Steam Ahead’ Learning Experience in Unit 2. The vocabulary the children will explore in this Learning Experience is vital to their understanding of the subject; they will build on the vocabulary learnt in previous Learning Experiences to further broaden their understanding of the Holocaust. From this Learning Experience, children will gather an understanding of the importance of democracy, tolerance, individual liberty and justice.

Vocabulary: Here is the essential vocabulary for this Learning Experience: journey, escape, train, rescue, voyage, holocaust, democracy, liberty, freedom, Kindertransport, danger, persecution, genocide, division.

Maths

During this half term, children will develop their knowledge and understanding of addition and subtraction through the mastery approach.  The children will be expected to use their prior understanding of mathematical concepts to assist them in solving a range of mathematical problems. They will be challenged to become more fluent with their skills, which include using the inverse to check their answers, as well as using the formal methods to calculate their answers. There will be a particular focus on ensuring the children reason with their responses (asking themselves if the answer given is appropriate).

Literacy

Through the six week learning experience, the children will be expected to write descriptive settings about what it was like to be a child involved in the ‘Kindertransport’, as well as developing the quality of their character descriptions. They will explore, in detail, the grammatical features of the genre to ensure they produce a high quality outcome. The children will continue to be encouraged to read a range of quality texts as these experiences broaden their vocabulary and develop their awareness of more complex punctuation and sentence structures.

Science

This term will see the children continue to explore Earth and Space. Children will explore how the Earth and Moon move within our Solar System in relation to each other and the Sun. Children will look in depth at how the Sun appears to move in the sky and its effects on our planet. Finally, children will explore how seasons, days and years are influenced by the way in which our planet moves in relation to other objects in our Solar System.

Home Learning

During this learning experience, we would like the children to create a ‘things precious to me’ box to help them understand what is really important to them and irreplaceable. It will reflect the things a Kindertransport child might have taken with them and why those items are precious. These will be shared as part of our class assembly. Weekly spelling and maths tasks can be found on Sumdog/TT Rockstars/Maths Shed and Literacy Shed. For reading homework this year, we would like children to read regularly at home so that they can quiz on their books in school. Each child has been given a zippy folder for their books and any additional pieces of homework.

PE / Art / Spanish / RE

In PE this half term, our focus will be sports hall athletics where the children will take part in a variety of circuit style activities and measure their own performance.

  • Eagles – PE on Monday and Friday
  • Kestrels – PE Monday and Wednesday
  • Hawks – PE on Tuesday and Wednesday

In DT, we will be creating items to sell in our Christmas fayre.

In Spanish, this half term, the children will learn about rooms in the house/where they live, as well as how Christmas is celebrated in Spain.

In RE this term, children will learn about Judaism and the signs and symbols of the faith.

Our School Value Focus: Responsibility
