Unit 2 (Year 1 and 2) Spring 1 2020 Newsletter

'What is Profit?'

Learning Experience Rationale

The Learning Experience is called “What is Profit?” Throughout the Learning Experience we will expect the children to become entrepreneurs and to be able to answer questions about what makes an ethical profit in business. They will explore clear and concise instructional writing through creating their own pizza recipe. The children will then research healthy foods to put on their pizzas and what difference that makes to their wellbeing. The children will develop an understanding of what profit is, and use the profits generated by our Pizza Café outcome to buy some equipment for our new guinea pigs. This Learning Experience will build upon the knowledge children gained when they made soup in Foundation Stage and will lead onto the ‘Smooth Operators’ smoothie making and marketing Learning Experience in Unit 3.

Learning Experience Hook and Outcome

Mr Ord has visited the Owls classes and asked for our help in creating something profitable, healthy and hot to sell in the winter months. The children will then create healthy profitable pizzas in teams for their grown ups to purchase from an extended Pop-Up Café on Thursday 6th February 2020.We will then use the value of democracy to vote on what to spend the profits on for our guinea pigs.

Vocabulary

The children will be introduced to a range of vocabulary, ranging from simple everyday words (tier 1) to complex vocabulary that is context driven (tier 3).

Tier 1 words: café, vegetable, fruit, healthy, recipe, sell, more than, less than.

Tier 2 words: trade, unhealthy, ingredients, temperature, profitable, produce, equal, profit

Tier 3 words: expense, unprofitable, nutrients, unethical, profit, imperative, entrepreneurs.

Maths

Children will be learning to subtract, with Year 1s focusing on subtraction within 20 and Year 2s developing their understanding and subtracting 2 two-digit numbers.

We are keen to develop the children’s fluency and recall of number bonds to 10, 20 and 100. A solid understanding of these helps to create confident and fluent mathematicians as they grow. These facts are vital for adding and subtracting. Please encourage your child to practice at home, either orally or using the Maths Shed program.

Literacy

Children will each write their own set of instructions (a recipe) for creating a pizza. We will be focusing on imperative verbs (verbs that give a clear and direct instruction, e.g. make, mix) and conjunctions of time (first, next, then). The children will develop an understanding of marketing to generate profit as they try to convince people to buy their pizza through creating promotional posters. They will be expected to have a clear understanding of the key vocabulary learnt during this Learning Experience.

Music, art, poetry and film as part of this Learning Experience

Children will enjoy the chance to watch video clips of professional chefs cook pizza from scratch.

School Values

In Assemblies we are learning why Independence is important.

British Value

This half term, in our Class Assemblies, we are learning about the British Value of Democracy.

Wider Curriculum

In RE, we will learn about Islam. We will learn about Muslims, their stories and their traditions.
In music, we will learn to play tuned instruments through playing musical games.

In Spanish, we will be learning how to introduce ourselves to people using the greetings we already know.

Reading at Home

Children will bring home two new Read Write Inc books weekly. Please encourage your child to read these aloud to you as often as is possible. These books are linked to sounds they have learnt and they should read these independently. This will help your child to develop fluency and expression, which will enable them to become confident readers. Your child will also bring home a library book. Please share this with your child and enjoy time spent together reading.

Dates to remember

Thursday 6th February – Pizza Café outcome in the Hall. Please come along and pay £1 (via contactless card) to support the children in their endeavour.

Home Learning

Create a poster:

  • What does a healthy, balanced meal look like?
  • Create your own recipe for a different dish.
  • Promote your product, aiming to make profit.

Messages

*Please let the office know if your child will be picked up by someone other than yourselves. This helps us to keep everyone safe.
