Unit 2 - Years 1 & 2

Unit 2 Home Learning

Our Learning Experience is called ‘What makes a good story?’ and we have focussed on the language used by authors to convey their ideas and meaning. We have looked at a well- known story (The Tiger who came to Tea) and have rewritten it with a twist. For home learning based around this, please choose as many as you like from these activities:

  • Can you write an exciting character description for a fairy tale villain?
  • Can you create a story setting description? To go alongside, can you paint or draw what it will look like?
  • Read a fairy tale (of your choice) with your grown- ups…. now can you rewrite it with a twist?
  • Can you draw and label your favourite fairy tale characters in a picture?
  • Can you create a wanted poster for a famous fairy tale villain? E.g. the big bad wolf or the witch from Hansel and Gretel.
  • Read 2 fairy stories, now can you use your creativity to create a story that combines them both? E.g. what would happen if the 3 little pigs knew Red Riding Hood and the woodcutter?
  • Can you create some salt dough measuring out the ingredients to create fairy story characters?
  • Play the fairy story game with your grown-ups. Each person has to think of a character and then you get to ask 10 questions to work out which character they are. Then swap over. Think of questions with a yes or no answer. E.g. “are you a witch?”.
  • Create your own book nook at home where it is cosy and comfy for you to share books together.

Maths

  • Using your body eg: hands or a tape measure (if safely supervised by a grown-up) how tall is your settee? How tall is your kitchen table? How tall are your mummies? How tall are your daddies?
  • While out on a walk practise your subitising. Look at a collection of acorns and estimate how many there are then check.
  • Make a cake and measure the ingredients carefully. Then how can you share it out equally? How many parts might you divide it into?
  • See attachments below for Year 2 SATs practice.

Reading

  • Continue to share your RWI books together. Encourage the children to read aloud as much as possible. Please continue to work through the Set sounds booklets your child has brought home. Please refer to these videos for guidance on pronunciation:

  • Children could also create their own RWInc sound cards to use at home. They could teach them to a class of teddies.
  • While the children are completing any of these tasks, please praise them for showing any of our 6 school values: independence, team work, respect, responsibility, creativity and determination. Please discuss these with the children: Why are our values important? How can we show them during this time? How do they help us to learn?
  • Oxford Owl website have many free books online for children to read and listen to.
  • Storyline Online also have a bank of stories.
  • See attachments below for Year 2 SATs practice.

Personal, social and emotional development

  • Play UNO with your family.
  • Get out a board game and take turns.
  • Devise your own craft project.
  • Learn something new eg; Knitting.
  • Make a card for a neighbour who may be lonely.
  • Write a letter to a classmate and bring it with you when we return.

Please find below additional resources to help Year 2 children prepare for their SATs. If you don't have a printer, talk through your methods with each other.
