Love to Learn

May 18, 2026

On Friday, a group of Unit 4 children enjoyed a trip to South Devon College Automotive department as part of our ‘Love to Learn’ School Aim. This also links with our 30 Ways to Connect - number 22, take a trip to a University or College.

The children were warmly welcomed by staff from the college who taught them all about what it means to work in mechanics, different types of careers they could have in automotives, and the main differences between electric and petrol motors. The children were then challenged to use cardboard, batteries, a fan motor, and wires to create the fastest toy car. They hugely enjoyed racing them and the top three teams each won a chocolate prize to share, with sweets for the runners up! Children were taught to calculate the speed of the cars in metres per second. Everyone loved watching the car ramps go up and down with cars on them, and playing inside the cars pretending to drive each other around on our break!

All the children taking part in the enrichment were an asset to our school with their brilliant manners and insightful questions for the college teachers and students. Thank you so much for having us South Devon College!
