History Enrichment for Unit 2

History Enrichment for Unit 2

March 10, 2026

Unit 2’s visit to Torquay Museum was an exciting opportunity to deepen their History learning, especially as they discovered more about the incredible life of Percy Fawcett, the famous explorer who came from Torquay. The children were fascinated to learn about his many achievements and the important role he played as a historical figure.

During the trip, Unit 2 explored a wide range of primary and secondary sources. These real-life examples of historical evidence helped the children understand how Historians piece together information about the past. They loved getting hands-on with the artefacts and displays, showing great curiosity and asking thoughtful questions about what they discovered.

The children were especially inspired by the workshops led by the brilliant museum staff. A particular highlight was learning how to make a traditional explorer’s compass - something Percy Fawcett himself might have used! This activity truly brought history to life and showcased a perfect example of the School Aim, ‘Love to Learn’. The children were completely engaged and eager to find out more.

The visit also linked perfectly to Number 2 on the school’s 30 Ways to Connect: Visit a museum. Experiences like this enrich pupils’ learning and support their development as well‑rounded, curious citizens with a love of exploring the world around them.

It was a fantastic day full of discovery, teamwork, and excitement - one Unit 2 will remember for a long time!
