Phonics Information Session
Phonics Information Session

October 9, 2025
Our Foundation teachers recently hosted a Phonics and Early Reading Information Session for parents and carers. During the session, they shared how we foster a love of reading at Preston and inspire all children from the very beginning of their learning journey.
Teachers gave an insight into the teaching of reading and provided practical tips on how families can support reading at home.
Key points from the session included:
- The importance of using pure sounds (avoiding adding an “uh” sound at the end) and using sounds rather than letter names. https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/reading-owl/find-a-book/read-write-inc-phonics--1/phonics-pure-sounds-video
- Encouraging correct letter formation using the Read Write Inc. handwriting phrases. Each child has a Set 1 Sounds handwriting booklet to use at home.
- Engaging with phonics activities on Seesaw.
- Playing “I Spy” games using letter sounds instead of names.
- Supporting children’s gross and fine motor development through active play.
- Praising early mark making and patterns. Each child has a pencil control pattern booklet.
This session reflected our school aim ‘Love to Learn’, by showing how early reading and phonics can spark curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong enjoyment of learning. If you would like to find out more about how we teach phonics, please do not hesitate to speak with your child’s class teacher.
