'What is the cost of profit?'
Learning Experience Rationale
We want to thank Summer, Harry and Devanshu for persuading the Unit 4 teachers to use Fair Trade as the driver for this learning experience.
The architects of this Learning Experience are the children as their hard work from last half term has persuaded the teachers to address an issue they feel passionately about. This passion has brought about our ‘What is the cost of profit?’ Learning Experience, which will explore the concept of Fair Trade. This builds on learning from Unit 2, where they discover what profit is and their Milkshake Maths Learning Experience in Unit 3. In this Learning Experience, children will explore the ethical standards of businesses and how profit can be affected by suppliers and workers’ rights around the world. Children will also build on their previous learning where they will apply their understanding of democracy, campaigning for change and their rights (including the rights of others) as citizens.

In Assemblies we are learning why Teamwork is important.
This half term, in our Class Assemblies, we are learning about the British Value of Individual Liberty.
Here is a range of vocabulary we will be using this half term, from the everyday words that link to the Learning Experience, to the more subject specific terminology:
Tier 2: trade, fairness, rights, environment, tea, coffee, bananas, chocolate, sugar
Tier 3: cooperative, economy, campaign, equality, supplier, ethical, exploitation, cocoa, producer, consumer.
To develop an understanding of maths mastery, it is important to explore different ways to show understanding. This develops a more resilient mathematician. This half term, we will focus on using journaling to better show our understanding of Division and Fractions.

This half term, the children will be writing to balance an argument. Following our hook, children will understand the importance of Fair Trade and how they have a responsibility as consumers. This will enable them to speak with confidence on the subject of why it is important to make conscious decisions about their purchasing.
From this, children will lobby for change and present their arguments to the school catering company.
Science – Describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences, including micro-organisms, plants and animals
ICT – use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.Spanish – ‘Easter in Spain’ and ‘how do I order in a restaurant?’
RE – What is Islam?
Fair Trade Survey – On a shopping trip, we’d like children to explore the Fair-Trade products on offer: Are there many? What are they? How much do they cost? Children can share their findings how they feel is appropriate. This research will be shared during our outcome.

Allergies: We have a number of children with nut allergies, so please ensure that nut products are not brought into school.
Absence: Should your child be absent due to illness, please call the absence line on 01803 607589 and leave a message with your child’s name, class and reason for absence. Alternatively, you can text this information to 07786208446. If your child has sickness or diarrhea, they will need to be absent from school for at least 48 hours after the last episode of illness. For planned absence of any nature you will need to complete an absence request form. These are available on the school website or from the office.
Times of the school day: The school day begins at 8:50 am (Gates open at 8:40am) and finishes at 3:15.
Parking on the drive: In an effort to keep everyone safe, please do not park on the school drive when dropping off or picking up children, particularly when collecting children from after school activities.
School lunches: Please remember to order your child’s school dinner in advance if they are having one. You will no longer be able to order these on the day.
