Puffins and Penguins Newsletter, 2nd July 2021

Beach Trip:

We are all very excited as next week we will be going on our very first school trip! We will be walking to the beach and then having a play in the sand with our friends. We will provide a snack of fruit and biscuits for your child to eat at the beach. We will return to school in time to eat their lunch.

  • Monday 5th July – Puffins
  • Tuesday 6th July – Penguins

The children will wear their school uniform as usual.

Your child will need to bring a bag (ideally a rucksack type so that their hands are free) containing:

  • A sun hat.
  • A bottle of drinking water.
  • A small flannel or towel (to wipe their sandy feet).
  • A lightweight rain jacket (just in case!)
  • Optional - A small plastic spade. Please make sure this fits inside the rucksack so that you don’t accidentally knock against another person or car.

Please apply sun cream to your child before they come to school.

We will be sure to post pictures of our beach adventure on Seesaw and in the next newsletter.

Transition to Year 1:

We have started having conversations with the children about the changes ahead. This is to prepare the children for being in a new classroom with a new teacher in September. The three classes in Unit 2 are Snowy Owls, Little Owls and Tawny Owls. This week (when Unit 2 were on their beach trip) we went on a tour of the three classrooms where the Year 1 and 2 children spend their day. The children were very curious and enjoyed looking around the classes. Over the next few weeks, we will be posting some stories on Seesaw which will be read by one of the teachers in Unit 2 so that the children can become more familiar with the adults.

Learning Experience:

This week, we have continued our learning around the book ‘I love bugs!’

We explored some of the vocabulary in the book about how the creatures move, such as ‘flutter’, ‘glide’ and ‘scuttle’. We moved in a variety of ways, e.g. ‘scuttle like a beetle’ and ‘leap like a grasshopper’. We worked in small groups to perform a different part of the poem each. Our aim is to put all of the different sections together to create a performance poem of the entire book.

We then looked at photographs of real insects and worked with a partner to do some paired writing of some phrases to describe the bug. Some of us even used rhyming words! Examples were ‘spiny shiny’ and ‘sunny honey’. The children really impressed us with their enthusiasm and creativity!

Mathematics:

In Maths this week, some of us have been working with addition problems. We had a number sentence, e.g. 4 + 5 and we had to draw a picture the sentence, e.g. 4 red flowers and 5 blue flowers, or 4 worms and 5 ants. This helped the children to see the two different ‘parts’ of the calculation and the ‘whole’ number or the total.

Some of us have been working with ‘teen’ numbers and using Numicon and diennes (tens and ones equipment) to make numbers from 10-20.

Home Learning:

Storytime – Mrs Blatchford, one of the Year 1/2 teachers, is reading a funny book called ‘How to wash a woolly mammoth.’

Maths – There is a maths activity based on this week’s learning.

Phonics and reading – Enjoy reading your Read Write Inc books.

Sun safety:

In warmer weather, please help to ensure that your child is protected from the Sun.

Sun cream. Please apply sun cream at home in the morning.

Sunhat. Send in a labelled sun hat each day.

Water bottle. Please also remember to send in their water bottle each day. (You could put it in the fridge overnight or add ice cubes to it to make the water cooler.) In hot weather the children will be drinking more, so if their bottle is finished, we can also refill it from the water cooler in school.

Dates:

  • Monday 5th July – Puffins beach trip
  • Tuesday 6th July – Penguins beach trip
  • Friday 23rd July – last day of term
  • Thursday 2nd Sept – first day of Autumn term
