Learning Experience - No Limits? No Future!

Learning experience

Please find the details of our intended learning experience for the next 6 weeks: ‘No Limits? No Future!'

Children will be learning in depth about our local shark and ray life and how over fishing is affecting the ocean ecosystem. Children will use this knowledge to create concept boards featuring a variety of non-chronological reports and balanced arguments created by the children.

With their findings, children will take their work to the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth where we hope to display their arguments for members of the public to see.

Maths

During this half term, children will develop their knowledge and understanding of order of operations, fractions, decimals, percentages and properties of shapes. The children will be expected to use their prior understanding of mathematical concepts to assist them in solving a range of mathematical problems. The children will be challenged to become more fluent with their skills, which include multiplication tables and related division facts. There will be a particular focus on ensuring the children reason with their responses.

Literacy

Through the six week learning experience, the children will be expected to write a balanced argument exploring the public’s opinion on sharks. As always, the children will be encouraged to read a range of quality texts as these experiences broaden their vocabulary and develop their awareness of more complex punctuation and sentence structures.

Home Learning

As an ongoing task for this half term, the children are tasked with creating a shark inspired piece of art. This could take any form be it a model or a painting. We ask that these come into school on the 11th February. Weekly homework tasks are to be completed on Sumdog, TT Rockstars, MyMaths and Read Theory. In addition to this, spellings will be set weekly.

Our Value Focus: Independence

Throughout all our work this half term, children will use and apply the value of Independence.

Science

This unit of work is based on classifying living things in an environment. During this term, children will be able to sort and group animals based on their features, using examples as a guide. They will learn about Carl Linnaeus and his development of his classification system. The children will place animals into given groups based on certain characteristics and will design a creature with a specific set of characteristics. Within the unit, we will learn about types of microorganisms- which ones are good and which ones are harmful to humans.

PE / Art / Spanish / RE

In PE, this half term, children will be playing the sport of Handball. During this, children will be looking in-depth at the importance of teamwork in order to work as an effective team.

In Spanish, this half term, the children will be learning how to talk about everyday items they might carry in their back packs. We shall also look at how Easter is celebrated in Spain.

In RE this half term, we will be exploring creation stories across several different religions. This will enable us to compare and contrast the similarities and differences across different belief systems,
